Shakira Concert Measles Alert—Watch for Symptoms by June 6

United States: People attending Shakira at MetLife Stadium last week should know that measles were present then.

According to the official statement of Tuesday, “The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is alerting residents about potential exposures associated with a newly identified case of measles in a non-NJ resident who attended a concert in NJ while infectious.”

Shakira concert attendees from Thursday night to Friday morning were warned about the infection.

According to health officials, potentially exposed individuals “could develop symptoms as late as June 6.”

Symptoms and Incubation Period Explained

Symptoms may be a high temperature, a cough, a stuffy nose, teary eyes, and a rash that grows around the face in the few days following the infection.

It hasn’t been specified where the infected person was in the stadium, where they lived, or how they arrived for the concert.

Because of the New Jersey Transit strike that ended after, neither buses nor trains for the Garden State were running for Shakira’s concert, so Coach USA buses brought some attendees from the Port Authority to New Jersey for the concert.

Vaccination Urged Amid Rising Cases

Vaccinations help stop measles, but the World Health Organization says that no medicine exists to treat this preventable but highly contagious disease.

There have been five cases of measles in New York City and six cases elsewhere in the state this year, according to the New York State Department of Health.
