A mold hazard tied to poor drainage has led to the recall of over 1.7 million Midea-made AC units. Sold across major U.S. stores, the affected models may cause sore throats and respiratory infections.
United States: Over 1.7 million window air conditioners are recalled due to the possibility of mold growth that can cause serious health issues.
Midea makes the affected units, which are U Window Air Conditioners and U+ Window Air Conditioners, CBS News reported.

The standing water may lead to a mold risk because of a drainage issue that may also result in the water accumulating within the machines, as mentioned in a recall notice issued by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The CPSC has already gotten no fewer than 152 reports of mold accumulation in these air conditioners, US News reported.
About 1.7 million window air conditioning units have been recalled in the United States after 17 customers reported getting sick from fungal growth in the appliance.

As many as 17 individuals have reported illness due to exposure to symptoms that include coughing, sore throats, and respiratory infections.
The air conditioners have been sold from March 2020 through May 2025 at large retail stores such as Best Buy, Costco, and Home Depot. They range between 280-500 dollars.
Almost 46,000 more units were sold in Canada, CBS News said. These recalled units were marketed under various brand names, namely Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze.
The recall notice said most of the models are approximately 22 inches in width and 14 inches in height. Midea is giving a complete refund or free repair to customers, as US News reported.
