Alberta has now surpassed the entire US in measles cases this year, reporting 1,314 infections compared to America’s 1,288. Health officials warn the outbreak is still escalating, with summer events and school reopening likely to worsen the spread.
United States: Alberta has actually verified more cases of the measles than all the United States has reported this year.
Since March, the province has been fighting outbreaks, and by noon on Monday, the total case numbers in the province had soared to 1,314.

The most recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US indicates that the nation has already accumulated 1,288 cases this year.
According to Dr. Sam Wong, the president of the section of pediatrics with the Alberta Medical Association, “Looking at the numbers it saddens me,” as cbc.ca reported.
“I think if we had gotten to it sooner, and taken it more seriously sooner, then maybe we would not have reached this milestone where one province actually exceeds the entire case count for the United States, which has got 10 times the population as Canada,” Wong noted.

There were thirty new cases recorded in the period between noon on Friday and noon on Monday.
Moreover, as per Dr. Lynora Saxinger, an infectious diseases specialist with the University of Alberta, “It’s absolutely terrible.”
“It is really a massive scale of spread that’s going on right now,” as Saxinger noted.
Experts and health officials are of the general opinion that the real number of cases in Alberta is higher than the confirmed cases.
“I don’t think we’ve seen a suggestion of things levelling off and now there’s large meetings of people and after that school will be back in. So I think there’s still a period of serious vulnerability to increasing numbers for a while,” as per Saxinger.
“As an infectious diseases specialist, I never would have guessed this was going to happen because measles is supposed to be eradicated,” the expert noted.
The whole south zone and also some areas of the north are under a standing exposure advisory because of the prevalent propagation.
And the measles site of the Alberta government asserts that there are cases that remain unreported and unrecognized.
Saxinger is concerned over the effect of big summer events, including the Calgary Stampede, which wrapped up Sunday, as cbc.ca reported.
Zone 3 (south), zone 4 (north), and central health zones have recorded the worst outbreaks. Provincial data showed 102 hospitalizations, 15 of which were in the ICU, as of July 5.
No fatalities have been announced. According to the newest statistics on a national level, 58 per cent of the newly reported cases during the week of June 22 through to June 28 became known in Alberta.
